It is a truly grey, rainy, stay-under-the-duvet kind of day. Not that I’m under the duvet… Although I am wishing very hard that I was. So. To cheer things up around here, let’s take a look at all things sunshine yellow. It’s all over the place in home decor, fashion, weddings, and just about everywhere else at the moment, which makes this job easy.
I’m loving the yellow/grey combinations, but above anything, I love those shoes in the bottom row…
top row:
iomoi yellow palm personalized tray (iomoi.com), yellow fabric “headboard” featured in Domino, photo by James Merrell (dominomag.com), Free People drapey cowl top in sunflower (urbanoutfitters.com)
middle row:
yellow dresser featured in Martha Stewart Living magazine article called A Dab of Yellow… Martha was well ahead of the curve, given that the article originally appeared in MSL’s September 1998 issue(marthastewart.com), fabulous vintage McCoy pot on gorgeous fabric from Zucchini Flour Vintage (etsy.com), Hee Lounge designed by Hee Welling and sold through Design Within Reach (dwr.com)
bottom row:
Clouded tumbler in yellow acrylic (if you love it, go buy them now - they’re on clearance and may not last long…)from Anthropologie (anthropologie.com), the cutest shoes ever - Irina by Rafe New York (piperlime.com), Festival Grey and Yellow Botantical Rug by Foreign Accents (allmodern.com)
With her elegantly organic forms, and sophisticated color palette, Susan Dwyer’s ceramics and paper vessels are incredibly beautiful. You can see them all at her website: up in the air somewhere.
I first encountered her work while jurying the DIY Trunk Show - she obviously got my vote immediately… I’m not sure if she’s chosen to participate or not, but I really, really hope so. I’ve got some shopping to do!
Susan’s work was recently also featured on design*sponge, as well as several other design blogs (Design for Mankind, Apartment Therapy, and several others)… which means we should probably buy her work while we can. I predict it won’t be long before it’s difficult to find…
I love peeking into other people’s sketchbooks - it’s always interesting to see what caught someone’s eye, and how they draw for themselves. My sketchbooks are filled with tiny, unfinished drawings - a visual version of shorthand that can be used to flesh out the good ideas later. So it’s always impressive to see an artist who brings things to life in their sketches, like Samantha Hahn. I love her detailed-but-not style… these are a couple of the things from the “sketchbook” section of her website. She’s an illustrator by trade, and has some greeting cards as well - take a look if you haven’t seen her work before.
Our newest clients win the prize for most fun-sounding wedding reception… it’s an Oktoberfest-themed party, complete with German food, entertainment, and lots of German beer. Seriously, who wouldn’t want to go to this party?
This is a part of one of the illustrations we worked up for the couple, although ultimately it’s not going to be used. It does manage to get the point across, though.

Yesterday’s UPS delivery included a big box, which, when opened, revealed this:
It’s a print called “Umbrella Party” by Scott Campbell.
In other news, I got the word that Girl Metro’s been accepted to the One of A Kind show, here in Chicago… more to come on that as it gets closer (December). Also, Monday is my actual birthday, and I’ve declared it a holiday, at least around the studio. Have a great weekend everyone!
I know, it’s another year, just getting older, blah blah blah. But I love, love, love my birthday. Particularly, the present part. In the mail, I just got a little package with these lovelies inside it:
They’re vintage cellulose rose earrings from Cara Lyndon, and I’ve wanted them for ages. I suspect that they’re from my parents, since my mom loves sending multi-part gifts. I can’t wait to see what’s coming next…
Nook, which carries Girl Metro cards + calendars, opened its new location last weekend in Pittsford (near Rochester) New York. Nicole over at freshly blended posted a few images of the shop, and thought I’d post one here:
Gorgeous shop, no? I wish it were closer - I’d shop there even if they didn’t carry my stuff.
